Valor and Promotional Ceremonies

Uniforms

Proper class A uniform shall be worn by the member being awarded / honored.

Proper class A uniforms are requested to be worn by all attending department  members to show support to the member being honored.

Awarded department ribbons are to be worn at all times and are considered a mandatory part of the Class A uniform.

Proper wearing of department ribbons shall be in compliance with GO-02-005-01

Class A uniform hats are to be worn @ all times with the exception of.

1.      Entering a place of worship.

2.      During prayer / invocation.

3.      Following the lead of the officiating clergy as to when to cover or uncover their head.

Saluting

Members will salute when receiving an award or promotion from the Chief of the department or a higher ranking officer.

The recipient of the award /promotion shall first initiate the salute to the Chief and hold the salute until the Chief finishes his salute.

All department members in class A uniform, shall salute the flag during the National Anthem, God Bless America, and The Pledge of Allegiance.

Uniform hats remain on during the above, Salute is held until the completion of the music.  

September 11th Ceremony, Moment of silence

á         0950 hrs all NHRF&R companies will assemble in front of their respective fire houses.

á         0950 hrs Battalion 2 & 1 member of Squad 1 will proceed to fire control.

á         0958 hrs all companies will be ordered to stand at Attention.

á         0959 hrs Tower 1 collapsed, companies will salute, Present Arms.

á        Ringing of the bell will commence @ 0959 hrs and ring 4 sets of  5 chimes.

á        Ringing of the bell will take place at fire control and transmitted over the vocal to all houses.

á        Normal fire station wear will be worn.

á        After the ringing the dismissal will be performed by the Company Officer / Acting Officer, Order Arms, Dismissed.

Wakes and Funerals

á        Uniforms: Standard issue Class A uniform.

á        All off-duty members and those on-duty members, upon relief from normal duty, should make every effort to honor their fellow members by attending the funeral services.

á        On-duty members when attending the wake {viewing} will wear proper station wear.

á        Sweatshirts, golf shirts, bunker gear are not appropriate

Honor Guard Detail

*        At least four (4) honor guards are required.

*        One member of the Honor Guard shall be designated as the Officer of the guard (OG). He shall be responsible for obtaining necessary equipment (white gloves, black badge tape, ect.) and for the scheduling of the Honor Guard members.

*        Two Honor Guards, one for the head and one for the foot of the casket, should usually be scheduled at ten (10) minute intervals.

*          Uniforms shall be class A dress uniforms with tie and white gloves.

*          Honor Guard shall stand at attention at their assigned positions for the duration of their ten (10) minute tour of duty.

*          Honor Guard may be used during viewing and prior to the service as custom dictates.

Active Pallbearers Detail

*        The Active Pallbearers detail shall consist of six (6) pallbearers and one officer.

*        The officer of the detail shall contact the funeral director and Chaplin for detailed instructions.

*        Pallbearers will not salute while acting in this capacity

*        The flag shall be placed over the casket with the blue field over the deceased’s left shoulder.

*        Any time the casket is moved in public, Funeral Home to coach, coach to church, church to coach or coach to grave site the pallbearers carry it.

*        The pallbearers will sit in the designated place at the services.

*        The pallbearer detail will be responsible to know how to fold the U.S. flag properly, and do so in the ceremony, and make the proper presentation to the commanding officer, and in turn to the surviving spouse.

*        Upon orders from the officer, the detail shall take their place with the rest of the funeral detail.

Funeral Detail

á        All members of the department, not otherwise detailed, will act as the Funeral Detail, in dress uniform, gloves are not required.

á        The Funeral Detail will arrive as a group from a staging area prior to the arrival of the funeral coach at the church.

á        For formal and semi-formal funerals the funeral detail will take a positioning in front of the church in two (2), facing ranks with city officials closest to the entry followed by the Fire Department officers in order of rank then funeral detail.

á        As the pallbearers move the casket the Officer in charge (Battalion Chief or the Deputy Chief) will call the Funeral Detail to Attention. If the casket is draped with the flag the Officer in charge will order a hand salute as the casket passes. The command shall be “Present Arms!” The command to end the salute will be “Order Arms!”

á        After the casket passes the Officer in charge will order, “At ease!” and the Funeral Detail will file into the church according to rank and sit in a designated area of the church. Head covering is removed upon entering a place of worship.

á        Note the last two directives above are repeated upon leaving the church, and again at the grave site prior to the committal services.

á        The funeral Detail should ride as a group in cars or vans from funeral home to church, church to grave site.

á        After the casket is placed over the grave the Funeral Detail form ranks in front of the grave, highest rank on the right.

á        If taps are sounded, uniformed members should execute a hand salute on the order of the Officer in charge.

á        At any time the officiating Pastor, Rabbi, or Chaplin says, “Let us Pray”. All personnel will bow their heads.

á        All personnel, except the pallbearers while holding the flag, will follow the lead of the officiating clergy as to when to cover or uncover their heads.

NORTH HUDSON REGIONAL FIRE & RESCUE
