North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue is a Regional Fire Department; established to protect the communities of North Bergen, Union City, West New York, Weehawken, and Guttenburg. The Department is organized under the "New Jersey Consolidated Municipal Service Act".

North Hudson Regional is administered by an "autonomous governing body" known as the" joint meeting". The joint meeting consists of a management committee of five [5] members; one member appointed by the governing body of each community. The management committee oversees the administration of the department through two co-directors and a Fire Chief.

The primary functions of the North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue organization are:

  • Administration
  • Operations
  • Fire Prevention
  • Public Education
  • Rescue and Special Services
  • Training
  • Apparatus
  • Division Management
  • Battalion Management
  • Station Management
  • Company Management

The geographic area served by North Hudson Regional totals approximately 10 square miles and stretches in a north/south direction. Due to the size and shape of the area covered, and to effectively manage operations; the Department is sub- divided into three battalions. The area beginning at the Jersey City border and heading north to 32nd Street is known as Battalion 1. The area beginning at 32nd Street and heading north to 60th Street is known as Battalion 2. The area beginning at 60th Street and heading north to the Bergen County border is known as Battalion 3.

Battalion One consists of 4 Engine Companies, 2 Ladder Companies and a Mask Service Unit. Battalion Two consists of 4 Engine Companies and 2 Ladder Companies. Battalion Three consists of 4 Engine Companies, 1 Rescue company and 1 Ladder Company. One Engine Company within each Battalion also serves as a Squad Company.

The chain of command of the Department consists of Chief of Department, Deputy Chief, Battalion Chief, Captain, and Firefighter. The Chief of Department is responsible for the overall management of the operations of the Department.

The Department is structured under the management principle of a "line and staff" organization. The line organization consists of one Deputy Chief in command of a "shift" or platoon. One Battalion Chief is in command of each of the three battalions within the platoon. One Captain is in command of a fire company. A fire company consists of a Captain and Firefighters.

The "staff" organization of North Hudson Regional consists of a Chief of Staff [Deputy Chief], a Community Relations Division, Training Division, and a Planning and Support Division.

Additionally, the Department relies on line officers to also manage special functions as follows:

  • Chief of Disaster Planning
  • Chief of Rescue Services
  • Chief of Marine Services
  • Chief of Hazardous Materials
  • Chief of Ceremony and Protocol
  • Chief of Safety and Health
